The 26-year-old was dropped to the bench for the midweek clash against Chelsea after his disappointing performance last weekend against Newcastle United.

He is a major doubt for the visit of the Cherries on Saturday afternoon, however, missing a final training session today through illness.

Speaking at a press conference earlier on Friday, Erik ten Hag challenged his forward to follow the examples set by Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay, two players who have firmly forced their way back into the first-team after difficult spells.

‘So Rashford is an incredible, good player,’ said Ten Hag.

‘You can’t do it with 11 players, he can’t play every game, he’s not in this moment in the form he was last year but I am sure he will get there.

‘What I said about Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire: up to them. The team will always line themselves up and the best players who form the best team will play.’

Rashford, along with Anthony Martial, were replaced by Antony and Rasmus Hojlund against Chelsea, with that duo joining Alejandro Garnacho in attack.

United created 18 opportunities in the first-half alone in a much-improved performance with former defender

‘He put the right players on the pitch and United fans won’t understand if that same team doesn’t play the next game,’ Evra told Amazon Prime.

‘I will understand if it’s an injury, but I think it will be tough for Marcus and Martial to come back in the starting XI.

‘Garnacho had an amazing game, Antony had an amazing game and the work ethic, you can have nothing negative to say about those players.

‘So I hope this team will stay [as it is] and it’s going to be tough for Marcus and Martial and they will have to fight to get their places back because the kids played very well today.’
