Mount was into the final year of his deal at Stamford Bridge and he told the club he was .
That was after months of negotiations, that had started with Mount fully intending to stay at Stamford Bridge.
The England ace expected the club to offer him a significant increase on his £80,000-a-week salary, which he signed before even making his Premier League debut for the Blues in 2019.
But Chelsea’s offer was believed to be around £120,000-a-week, which could rise significantly based on bonuses.
The club also wanted Mount to sign a deal until 2030, which would have taken Mount to the age of 31.
After a breakdown in initial talks, Chelsea offered Mount a one-year extension that included a £70m release clause.
Mount’s team felt this was a clear indication that they wanted to sell him and they swiftly rejected the proposal.
And, speaking in an interview with United’s media team, Mount claims it was ‘clear’ he was not part of Chelsea’s future.
‘Several months ago it became clear that I wasn’t in Chelsea’s plans moving forward,’ said Mount.
‘Once I knew that Manchester United were involved my decision was made.’
Mount has been handed the iconic no.7 shirt at Old Trafford and has taken over the reins from Cristiano Ronaldo, who wore the shirt before his departure last November.
The playmaker says it’s an honour to join such a prestigious club and he admits he was desperate to complete his move before pre-season starts.
‘It’s a massive club, huge iconic players have played here and I wanted to be a part of that from the beginning,’ said Mount.
‘Getting in early, ready for pre-season to start was a main objective of mine as well.’
