Michael Carrick is reportedly in the running to become Lincoln City’s new boss, with the icon looking to kick-start his managerial career.
Lincoln are on the hunt for their new head coach after the departure of Michael Appleton in April following a disappointing campaign in League One.
The Imps finished 17th in the third tier, only a year after just missing out on promotion to the Championship following a defeat to Blackpool in the play-off final.
Now, the have reported that Carrick is under consideration for the vacant role at Sincil Bank, and the former , Tottenham, United and England star is said to be interested.
One of the best defensive midfielders of his generation, Carrick endured a highly successful career, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League in a 12-year-spell at Old Trafford.
He retired in 2018 but remained at United, joining the club’s backroom staff under Jose Mourinho and then Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Following the Norwegian’s sacking last November, Carrick took charge of the Red Devils for three games before departing Manchester for good upon Ralf Rangnick’s appointment as interim manager.
The 40-year-old impressed in his short caretaker spell, beating Villarreal away 2-0 in the Champions League, drawing 1-1 with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and defeating Arsenal 3-2 at home.
Regarded as one of the smartest players of his time, Carrick has been tipped to go into management for a while, with former United boss Louis van Gaal hinting at his coaching abilities way back in 2015.
‘He [Carrick] is important because he can read the game as a player on the pitch,’ the Dutchman said.
‘He can also coach during the game, but he can improve that I think.
‘He is my second captain and is an important man for my selection. Wayne Rooney is my first captain and Michael Carrick is my second captain and that says enough what I think about those players.’
