Michael Owen says Harry Kane should stay at Hotspur this summer as winning a trophy with Bayern Munich ‘is no great achievement’.
The ball appears to be in Kane’s court after Bayern agreed a fee with Tottenham for his signature this week.
The clubs may have agreed a price for the captain but he must now sign a contract to move to the Bundesliga giants and there is still some doubt over whether that will happen.
Bayern are confident they will get their man – or they wouldn’t have pursued him all summer – but Owen believes Kane should leave the Germans hanging and stay with Spurs.
The former Liverpool striker admitted that there were clubs Kane should leave Tottenham for – including his own former club Real Madrid – but Bayern is not one of them.
‘I know are a massive club and I have huge respect for them but if I were I’d stay put,’ Owen tweeted. ‘There’s no great achievement in winning a trophy with them.
‘ I would understand. Or one or two top clubs for that matter. Becoming the all time Premier League top goal scorer at Tottenham is a bigger achievement than winning the league in a country dominated by one team.’
Kane wanted his future decided by Friday night, with Tottenham’s Premier League campaign getting underway at Brentford on Sunday.
Therefore a decision is expected to be made pretty quickly, with Bayern in action in the Super Cup on Saturday against RB Leipzig and getting their Bundesliga campaign started at Werder Bremen on 18 August.
