With the Gunners already qualified for the knockout stages of the , Arteta made eight changes to his side for the final group game away to PSV.

He said in his post-match press conference when asked about Rice: ‘We are very short at the back, I really wanted to try when something happens, how we are going to resolve that situation and I think it was really good.

He added: ‘He’s played there before and we have to try in case of an emergency.
