is wearing a protective boot and is set for a scan on an injury that forced him out of Arsenal’s defeat to Brighton, confirmed Mikel Arteta.

It was a nightmare afternoon for the Gunners at the Emirates as they were beaten 3-0 by the Seagulls, ending any realistic chance of winning the title this season.

It was an incredibly deflating match for Arsenal as they faded badly in the second half when all three goals were scored, ultimately comfortably beaten by Roberto De Zerbi’s men.

An added headache for Mikel Arteta after the match was the injury suffered by Martinelli thanks to a heavy challenge from early on.

The Brazilian was forced off 20 minutes into the match and Arteta confirmed that he is set for a scan on the foot injury that left him in a protective boot at full time.

‘We don’t know,’ Arteta said of the extent of the problem. ‘He’s in a boot at the moment.

‘It was very uncomfortable for him to walk, he couldn’t carry on playing – so obviously we need to scan him and see the extent of that injury.’

After a remarkable challenge for the title, it looks all over for Arsenal and it is a significant comedown from last weekend when a fine win at Newcastle kept their hopes alive.

‘A really different feeling to the feeling that we all had last Sunday when we felt proud and we felt that we really did what we needed to win in certain moments,’ said the Gunners boss.

‘Today is completely the opposite. We have to apologise for to our people especially for the second half

‘At the moment it’s just frustration. The feeling that we gave the game away second half. We fought really hard to be in the position that we are in. today we were in a critical moment to keeping hoping for that dream.’
