are going to have an extremely busy summer in the transfer market and they have put and Hugo Ekitike at the top of their list of targets.

Investment from the Saudi-led owners of Newcastle began in January when they brought in the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier, but many more signings are expected over the next transfer window.

Telegraph Sport report that Calvert-Lewin has made his way to the top of their list of first team strikers, ahead of the likes of Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah, Brentford’s Ivan Toney and Benfica’s highly-touted Uruguayan forward Darwin Nunez.

Arsenal have long been linked with a move for Calvert-Lewin and the Gunners are still in search for a new striker this summer, although the England international’s poor season has dampened these rumours.

The 25-year-old’s season has been hit hard by injuries, only starting 12 Premier League matches and scoring just three league goals.

Everton are very unlikely to want to let Calvert-Lewin go and he is under contract until 2025, but Newcastle have the funds to make a huge offer and the England international may see the Magpies as a more ambitious project than the Toffees.

Newcastle tried to sign Ekitike in January but a move fell through and he has since been linked with a switch to Manchester United from current club Reims.

The 19-year-old forward has impressed in Ligue 1 this season , Newcastle expect to get the deal done over the summer.

Speaking about Newcastle’s upcoming summer transfer business, Howe said: ‘With deals, we are mentally ready to go. As in, there has been a lot of work from the recruitment team and myself to know what direction we want to go in.

‘But with deals, as everyone knows, they are very unpredictable and you can never say we are going to bring players in early.

‘When we do our business, if we do our business, well that’s a toss of a coin because you’re in the hands of the selling club. But we are going to be active and we will be working hard to improve the team.’
