will miss ’s clash against Liverpool after picking up an injury, has confirmed.

The right-back has started 18 of Newcastle’s 19 league games this term, also ever-present in the side during the Champions League group stages.

Newcastle have lost six of their last seven games in all competitions

The captain was a notable omission in the side taking on Liverpool at Anfield on Monday night.

Callum Wilson also misses out with Howe confirming both players picked up knocks in the 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day.

Newcastle have not won a Premier League game at Anfield since April 1994, also losing the reverse fixture at St James’ Park earlier in the season after two late goals from Darwin Nunez.

‘We have to be very, very good in every aspect of our game because if there’s a weakness in your structure or in your set-up, then they will find it. They’ve got quality players,’ Howe said.

‘It’s always a great experience to go to Anfield; it’s always a brilliant arena to play in.

‘We learned some painful lessons last year [Liverpool scored an injury-time winner]. Hopefully we can use that experience to good effect this time.’

Liverpool can go three points clear at the top of the Premier League with another win tonight.
