Neymar has been fined a huge 16 million reais (£2.6m) for breaching environmental regulations while building an artificual lake at his mansion in the city of Mangaratiba.
The Saint-Germain forward has been accused of breaking rules on the use and movement of freshwater sources, rocks, and sand at his coastal home outside Rio de Janeiro.
Complaints were made after the major construction at Neymar’s property and environmental officers inspected the home.
They have dished out the heavy fine, which Neymar can be appeal, but the decision has been passed on to the police and the record-breaking Brazil goal-scorer could be prosecuted.
A statement read: ‘The Department of the Environment, in addition to applying the fines considering the environmental damage caused, as well as the disrespect for the environmental laws in force, have notified the facts found to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Civil Police, the Environmental Protection Police Station and other environmental control bodies.’
The 31-year-old has been hit with four separate fines, each being the maximum he could have received for the breaches he has been accused of.
Neymar has been linked with a move away from PSG this summer, touted as a possible signing for the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and former club Barcelona.
Reports emerged that Barca had agreed a deal to bring him back to the Camp Nou, but manager Xavi shut down those rumours, saying: ‘I’m surprised… he’s not in our plan. I really like Ney as a friend, but we have different priorities.’
