believes Arsenal will need three or four new players in their starting XI to catch next season, although believes their experience of this campaign will be valuable.

The Gunners’ dream of winning the title this season appears to be over after a 3-0 defeat at home to Brighton on Sunday afternoon.

After Manchester City beat 3-0 earlier in the day it means that Pep Guardiola’s side are four points clear with three games to play, while the Gunners have just two matches left.

It looks certain that this challenge is over, but Vieira says there has been clear progress from last season and a lack of experience in aiming for titles has cost them.

‘What is really important is the experience. Players going through this period will gain experience,’ the Arsenal legend told Sky Sports.

‘It was going to be challenging because these last 10 games they’re playing games to win and when you play games to win the pressure is different.

‘They will learn from this situation that they’re living at the moment and that will make them stronger next year.’

On what Arsenal must do in the transfer market to help bridge the gap to City, Vieira said: ‘There are some pieces they are missing on the field because when you look at the back they need a couple of pieces. A centre-back, they will need maybe a right-back.

‘In the midfield, I think there’s some good quality players but they need a bit more physicality.

‘Up front it’s important to have players who are capable of scoring goals and if they manage to play those three or four players in the starting XI then they’ll be a step closer to Manchester City.’
