Paul Merson says forward Timo Werner won’t be missed at Chelsea if he leaves the club at the end of the season.

Werner, who joined the Blues from RB Leipzig in 2020, has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge following a largely unsuccessful spell in west .

Former winger Merson believes Werner has left a lot to be desired and manager should not be too bothered by his departure.

Speaking on , Merson said: ‘I’m not being horrible but if Werner isn’t there (at the end of the season) it won’t make much difference. He hasn’t fulfilled his potential. He hasn’t come with what we expected at .

‘The way he was playing at Leipzig, he was a different player. I think playing in the pandemic doesn’t help anybody. I don’t think he’s recovered from that. If he plays well today (against Brentford), Tuchel might play him against and he could be a superstar again.’

Chelsea face Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night and Werner will be hoping to secure his place in the team for what is a mouthwatering clash.

If the German does feature, he will look to draw on the fine form he has shown at international level where he has scored six goals in his last six caps compared to none in his last eight for his club.

Last month the 26-year-old attempted to explain the contrast in his performance levels between playing for Germany and Chelsea.

‘There are differences in the style of play between football at Chelsea and here (Germany),’ Werner said. ‘Maybe the one at the national team suits me better.

‘Here, I always have scoring chances, I can score goals. I feel very comfortable here.’

Werner has scored only seven goals in 49 appearances since arriving at Chelsea.
