Per Mertesacker believes Arsenal are in a ‘good position’ to sign Ilkay Gundogan from this summer.
The 32-year-old has played an integral role in City’s historic season as ’s side completed the treble on Saturday evening final.
Gundogan is out of contract with City at the end of June and the midfielder has attracted interest from several clubs including Arsenal, Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund.
City, meanwhile, are also keen to keep Gundogan with Guardiola making it clear that he wants his captain to stay.
But former Arsenal captain Mertesacker, who is now the head of the club’s academy, feels the Gunners have a good chance of completing a deal for Gundogan this summer.
Speaking as a pundit for German broadcaster ZDF after the Champions League final, Mertesacker said he felt City’s treble win could convince Gundogan ‘to say, okay, mission accomplished’.
Mertesacker added: ‘IÂ think the clubs are queuing.
‘Because [Mikel] Arteta knows him and we probably haven’t broken off contact, we’re in a good position.
‘I think he’ll let it all sink in first and then choose from one of the four clubs.’
Meanwhile, Gundogan claimed after City’s win in the Champions League final that his future is still up in the air.
‘I have not made a final decision on my future yet,’ the midfielder said.
