VAR ruled that Marcus Rashford had taken the ball over the line (Premier League)

was denied his first goal after VAR’s tight call involving in the build up.

Danny Welbeck scored against his former club to put Brighton ahead but shortly before half time, Hojlund thought he had opened his account for United after he met Rashford’s pull back inside the area.

However, play was halted as VAR examined whether Rashford had taken the ball over the byline before he passed to Hojlund.

VAR eventually ruled that the entire ball had crossed the line, meaning that Hojlund is still looking for his first goal since his £72 million move from Atalanta in the transfer window.

More misery was piled on United

Pascal Gross rounded off a brilliant Brighton move to double the visitors’ lead in the 53rd minute.

Brighton then went three ahead when substitute Joao Pedro steered his effort past Andre Onana, who got a hand to the effort but was unable to keep it out.

Hannibal Mejbri pulled a goal back for United with 17 minutes remaining but it wasn’t enough as Erik ten Hag’s side have now registered three defeats in their first five Premier League games.

Ten Hag was also heavily booed by United supporters in the second half .
