have added yet another trophy to their collection courtesy of a 2-0 victory over winners Frankfurt in Helsinki on Wednesday night, tying the record in the process.
The holders dominated for large spells in Finland and opened the scoring shortly before half-time through an unlikely source: centre-back David Alaba.
Real increased their control of the match after the restart and yet another goal from Ballon d’Or favourite Karim Benzema wrapped up the Super Cup trophy for the fifth time – taking Los Blancos level with and AC Milan for most titles in the competition.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side made a somewhat tame start to the contest and the first big chance fell to Daichi Kamada, who was played clean through on goal but fired straight at Thibaut Courtois.
That seemed to fire Real up, who raced up the other end of the pitch and looked certain to score after a sweeping counter saw Benzema tee up the ball for Vinicius Junior 10 yards from goal.
The Brazilian thought he only had the goalkeeper to beat and fired a low effort towards the far corner, but Tuta arrived out of nowhere to produce an outstanding goal-saving block.
Frankfurt, now without last season’s star man Filip Kostic, were beaten 6-1 by Bayern Munich in their first match of the new Bundesliga season at the weekend but gave a good account of themselves in the first half, forcing Courtois into further saves.
But, in the 37th minute, Casemiro did brilliantly to keep the ball in play from a corner and Alaba was left with a tap-in into a completely unguarded net and duly opened the scoring from close range.
Real upped the ante in the second period, pinning Frankfurt back in their own half, and after several sighters they doubled their lead through Benzema shortly after the hour-mark.
The Frenchman was virtually unplayable in the Champions League last season, though his goal against Frankfurt was not one of his more memorable efforts.
Excellent work from the lively and tricky Vinicius saw the winger square for Benzema on the edge of the box and the striker’s rather tame effort – which was straight down the middle of goal – somehow went through a seemingly unsighted Kevin Trapp.
While not one of his prettiest goals, it was certainly a momentous one for Benzema as he bagged his 324th goal in a Real shirt – a tally which sees him overtake Raul to become the outright second top scorer in the club’s history behind only Cristiano Ronaldo.
Real had further opportunities to add to the scoreline and looked a class above Frankfurt in the second half, with Ancelotti deciding to make a host of changes late on as Real easily saw out the result to secure the Super Cup trophy yet again.
