legend believes that the club’s aspirations are over following their defeat at on Saturday.

Goals from Nuno Tavares and Bukayo Saka saw the home side race into an early lead at the Emirates, before Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 100th Premier League goal to give United a way back into the game.

The Red Devils were handed a golden opportunity to equalise when referee Craig Pawson awarded a penalty for a Tavares handball, only for Bruno Fernandes to miss the subsequent spot kick.

The match remained on a knife-edge until Granit Xhaka fired a long-range effort past David de Gea to secure back-to-back wins for Arsenal.

United have won just one of their last five Premier League games and Ferdinand is now certain that the team have no chance of finishing in the top four.

Speaking on BT Sport, he said: ‘First and foremost, credit to Arsenal they got the job done. By no means a top-class performance but they got what is needed at this stage which is the three points.

‘Manchester United had an opportunity to get back in this game, woodwork etc and missed a penalty.

‘They had them there for the taking Arsenal, but Manchester United didn’t smell blood. Big moments come up in games and you need to take them, and they didn’t have that in them today to take it.

‘They are in a bad run of form. Being brutally honest Ralf Rangnick’s come in and it’s got worse since Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] left.

‘Yeah, there’s no way United are going to get in the top four now, there’s no chance.’

The result has left United sixth in the table, six points off fourth placed Arsenal having played a game more.

The Gunners meanwhile have boosted their own chances of qualifying for the Champions league for the first time since 2016, although they still face stiff competition from arch-rivals Tottenham who play Brentford in Saturday’s late kick-off.
