has told boss that picking for Wednesday’s clash against Galatasaray is ‘unwise’.
Ferdinand made the comment in the build-up to the Champions League match in Istanbul before Ten Hag named the left-back in his starting XI.
Shaw has missed the majority of the season through injury but made his return in the 3-0 win over Everton on Sunday, as he started and completed 76 minutes.
Just three days later, Ten Hag opted to start Shaw again, but Ferdinand thinks it is the wrong call and feels the Dutchman should rested the England international before Saturday’s upcoming clash against Newcastle.
‘With Luke Shaw’s injury record, to play back-to-back straight away I think would be unwise,’ Ferdinand told TNT Sports.
‘I think because you risk losing him for another six or eight weeks so I would say listen you need to recuperate and get ready for the Newcastle game.’
Ferdinand also raised concerns over Kobbie Mainoo’s fitness but admits he would love to see him play in the Champions League.
Mainoo hugely impressed in the win over Everton and was named on the bench for the clash against Galatasaray.
‘Kobbie’s a younger kid but he’s been injured as well,’ Ferdinand added. ‘It’s almost about the physio and him being honest and saying where am I at, do I think I can go back to back again.
‘I’d personally love to see him in this atmosphere at this level, he passed a big test, a hard test at Goodison Park with everything going on off the field and I’d like to see what he’d be like in this cauldron of an atmosphere. I’d probably wait again but only because injury-wise.’
