has told his former club to copy ’s approach with Mikel Arteta and back their new boss.

The Gunners, after a slow start to life under Arteta, have started to show real progress in their third season with the Spaniard having resisted calls for him to be sacked earlier in the campaign.

Meanwhile, United are seeking a permanent manager following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking in November with ’s Erik ten Hag the favourite for the vacant hotseat in Manchester.

However, Ferdinand – who won six Premier League titles with United – believes the big wigs at Old Trafford must give the new man complete autonomy just like Arsenal have done with Arteta.

Speaking to ambassador Sir AP McCoy, he said: ‘Manchester United are obviously now looking for a new manager, and hopefully things will change.

‘If you look at Arsenal, they have found the manager, they trust in him and they have allowed him to do some things where a lot of people have probably doubted it.

‘(Such as) with the (Pierre-Emerick) Aubameyang situation, where people thought he’s a big player and you have to keep him. But now Arteta has done what he wanted and Arsenal are on a good run at the moment.

‘You have to trust in the manager and trust in the process and fingers crossed Manchester United will do that.’

It is rumoured Ten Hag, who has been recommended by interim manager Ralf Rangnick, has already been interviewed for the job and is set to takeover in the coming weeks.

United, who sit sixth in the league, are struggling to finish in the top four this season having endured a difficult campaign which will see them go five years without winning a trophy.

As a result, the club are planning to back Ten Hag in the transfer market and will look to launch bids for Harry Kane and Declan Rice in the summer according to a report in .

Yet, speaking earlier this week, former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole agrees with Ferdinand that unless United’s board provide the right support for Ten Hag then the whole project could fail once again.

‘For me,’ Cole said. ‘Unless they sort out what’s going on around Ten Hag, the structure is just going to be another manager that comes in and another manager that fails at Man Utd.’

If appointed, Ten Hag will be the fifth permanent manager to take over at Old Trafford since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
