Roy Keane felt England turned in a ‘terrible performance’ in the goalless draw with USA on Friday night, with a number of shortcomings across the team.

England fans were on a high after their 6-2 mauling of Iran on Monday, but things went from a demolition to a dirge on Friday night, with the Three Lions far from roaring.

The stalemate leaves ’s men top of Group B going into the final round of fixtures, so it is far from disastrous, but it was certainly underwhelming after the highs of the opening win.

With England struggling to make chances, Keane was surprised not to see emerge off the substitutes’ bench, especially with the team showing fatigue and an inability to step up a gear.

The Manchester United legend was certainly not impressed, pointing out the lack of creativity and threat in a below-par display.

‘We were all watching the game thinking Foden, you’d fully expect Foden to come on with the options,’ Keane said on ITV. ‘The subs that did come on didn’t really have an impact.

‘England looked leggy, they looked one-paced, short of ideas, even set-pieces you never felt they had a goal in their locker from that.

‘Really, it was actually a terrible performance.’

He added: ‘They need to do better, tonight wasn’t good enough.’

Captain Harry Kane said of the display: ‘Wasn’t the best performance for sure. Good spells with the ball, but we didn’t quite have the final product. Clean sheet puts us in a great position in the group.

‘We know we can play better than that, a draw in a World Cup isn’t bad, no game is easy. After our first performance people think we’ll landslide everything but it’s not the case. We played a good side but it’s not what we came here for.’
