Sam Kerr couldn’t resist mocking fans following ’s 4-1 drubbing in front of a record WSL crowd on Sunday.

Jonas Eidevall’s side have been forced to play second fiddle to their west rivals in recent years, but laid down a significant marker in their bid to be crowned champions.

Arsenal moved level on points with Chelsea at the top of the Women’s Super League.

Alessia Russo scored twice with Amanda Ilestedt also on the scoresheet after Johanna Rytting Kaneryd had cancelled out Beth Mead’s opener.

The result puts Arsenal on 22 points, second to Chelsea on goal difference, with Manchester City three points back in third.

Upon leaving the scene of a rare heavy defeat, Kerr was serenaded by jubilant Arsenal fans but the Australia star responded by holding aloft four fingers to signify the number of WSL titles she has won during her time at Stamford Bridge.

The day, however, firmly belonged to Arsenal and Eidevall was delighted with the progress his club has made both on and off the pitch.

‘I think the synergy between the crowd and the team was incredible today,’ said the Arsenal manager. ‘I think the team starts to get going well, but so does the crowd, and it just takes it to a new level.

‘I looked at it two-and-a-half seasons ago when we were playing Chelsea with 9,000 people here, and now we’re at 59,000 people.

‘It’s 59,000 people that scream their lungs out for Arsenal, what an atmosphere we created together and how much I just look forward to getting back here again for the next time at Emirates Stadium.

‘Hopefully, we can sell a few more tickets then and get a sellout in the WSL.’
