’s boyhood club Sporting Lisbon are reportedly interested in signing the forward back from .
According to , Sporting are hoping that after a disappointing season with United in 2021/22, Ronaldo is open to a move away from Old Trafford and they want the 37-year-old to finish his career with the club he began it with.
Ronaldo made his senior debut with Sporting in 2002 aged just 16, making 35 appearances for the Portuguese side and scoring five goals, before moving to United a year later in a then record-breaking move.
Following his stints at and , Ronaldo returned to United last season and on an individual level it was a successful comeback as he scored 24 goals in 38 games in all competitions and was named in the PFA Team of the Year.
However, the Red Devils endured an awful campaign, finishing sixth in the table with their lowest points tally in Premier League history whilst also extending their trophyless run.
As a result, there has been speculation that Ronaldo could leave United and while the player has committed himself to Erik ten Hag’s rebuild of the club, Sporting are still keen to prize him away.
A source close to the club said: ‘Sporting know that Ronaldo loves winning trophies. That looks a long way away at United at the moment and time is running out for Ronaldo.
‘So, what better way to finish his career than move back home and play in Portugal. It’s a strong league and a great lifestyle.
‘Senior officials have made enquiries and let Ronaldo know they are interested if he wishes to leave United.’
Ronaldo only has a year left on his contract, but it seems unlikely that United would be willing to sell their best player this summer, and while the appeal of returning to his boyhood club would no doubt be tempting, the Portuguese star has previously hinted he could keep playing into his 40s, so he still has plenty of time to make that move.
