coach Steve McClaren could reportedly leave Old Trafford to become the manger of surprise national team.

McClaren is currently serving as senior first-team coach having returned to United in 2022 as part of ’s backroom staff.

His future at the club has been put into doubt however following the arrival of several new coaches including former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy who has joined as assistant manager.

Now multiple sources, including , report that the 63-year-old has become a contender for the Nigeria manager’s job.

The Nigeria Football Federation have spoken to McClaren about the position, but he is one of several names under consideration with the NFF looking to have someone in place before qualifiers for the next Africa Cup of Nations begin in September.

And though he’s had a long career, the former England manager’s lack of experience of African football could see him drop out of contention.

McClaren hasn’t been the main man in the dugout since a poor spell at QPR came to an end in 2019.

Though he achieved success with Middlesbrough in the early 2000s, winning the League Cup and reaching a UEFA Cup final, his career since leaving the Riverside hasn’t been brilliant.

He embarrassingly failed to qualify the Three Lions for Euro 2008, while his only Premier League job since was an ill-fated nine months at Newcastle, which ended in relegation for the Magpies.

He’s also had spells at Twente, Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest and Derby County.

For now, his focus is on preparing United for the upcoming campaign, with their next pre-season fixture against Rangers on Saturday.

The Red Devils kick-off the 2024/25 season against rivals Manchester City in the Community Shield in August.
