were ready to pay £34million to sign Steven Bergwijn but the Tottenham forward is now on the brink of a move to .
Bergwijn joined Spurs from PSV Eindhoven in 2020 but is now set to complete a return to Netherlands to join the Dutch champions.
Reports in Netherlands claim Ajax have now agreed a fee of £26m with the north side, having already agreed personal terms with the forward last month. Bergwijn is now set to undergo a medical ahead of the move.
Ajax, then managed by Erik ten Hag, initially tried to sign Bergwijn during the January transfer window with the Dutch manager a huge admirer of the 24-year-old.
After being named the new United manager, reports suggested ten Hag was still keen on the Spurs forward with reporting concrete interest from Old Trafford.
The report claims United and Everton were both keen on a deal this summer, with both sides prepared to trump Ajax with offers of €40m (£34m) for Bergwijn.
However, the player’s desire has always been to move to Amsterdam ‘at all costs’.
Bergwijn will become Ajax’s record signing and is expected to sign a five-year contract with his new club.
Bergwijn was limited to just eight starting appearances for Tottenham last season, scoring three goals – two coming in a memorable comeback victory over Leicester in January.
He told Dutch outlet AD in June: ‘I just need to go play. I want to leave Spurs now, that’s for sure.
‘Is it important that my new club plays in the Champions League? That’s not my top priority. It would be nice, but what’s important is that I’m going to play.
‘I wasn’t allowed to leave Spurs in the winter and then I didn’t have any problems. But for the last few months, I was hardly looked after there.’
