Steven Gerrard has claimed that the current Liverpool side is the best team in the club’s history, as they pursue an unprecedented quadruple of trophies.
Gerrard’s side host Liverpool on Tuesday night, with ’s side in need of a win to keep their Premier League title hopes alive, following their draw with Tottenham last Saturday.
As it stands, Liverpool are three points behind leaders with just three games to go, and as a result they cannot afford to drop anymore points.
Even if they miss out on the title, this has still been another outstanding campaign for Klopp and the Reds however, with the club in the finals of the and Champions League, in addition to lifting the Carabao Cup earlier in the season.
Given their high level of success over the past few years, many believe that this Liverpool team are one of the best club sides in the history of the game and Gerrard appears to agree.
‘I think you’re probably watching the best Liverpool team there has been,’ the former Reds captain said in his pre-match press conference on Monday.
‘That’s due to the speed, mentality and intensity of this current group. The way the game has changed – it’s gone quicker, it’s gone faster.
‘But I say that without disrespecting previous Liverpool teams because I grew up watching them. The European Cup winners, serial league title winners – I grew up on all of that.
‘I’m well aware they’ve previously had world-class players, managers and teams.’
While Gerrard will undoubtedly want his former club to win the league, he remains focused on his job at Villa, with the 42-year-old aiming to finish the season in the top-half of the table in his first campaign with the club.
‘We’ve got to make sure we’re brave enough and show enough quality to hurt Liverpool,’ he added.
‘I’m never going to set a team up to just suffer for 90 minutes, but I don’t want that to be gung-ho or careless. It has to be calculated.
‘At times we’ll have to suffer but if we do that together and get through those situations, we believe with the form we’re in, we’ll have some interesting moments in the game.
‘That’s what Tottenham did. They were organised, they were patient. And when their moments came, they did cause Liverpool some problems.’
