Steven Gerrard has claimed that he is only focused on helping , with his side perfectly positioned to decide the fate of this season’s title race.

On Tuesday night, Villa narrowly lost to Gerrard’s beloved Liverpool, who are trying to chase down league leaders with only a couple of games remaining.

In a tense game, Douglas Luiz had put the Villans in front after just three minutes, only for Joel Matip to equalise almost immediately, before headed the winner in during the second-half.

The result has moved Liverpool level on points with City, with a slightly inferior goal difference, but while ’s side have just two games left, Pep Guardiola’s team have three.

City face Wolves on Wednesday night, but most interestingly they will host Gerrard’s Villa on the last day of the season, meaning that it is quite possible that the Liverpool legend could decide who wins or loses the title.

Asked about this after Tuesday’s game, Gerrard maintained that his only priority was to finish the season strongly with Villa.

‘We’ll wait and see what situation we’re in come the end of the season,’ the 42-year-old told Sky Sports.

‘But we’ve got a purpose to try and finish as high as we can in this league. We want to push for the top 10.

‘It’s got to be about us, we want to go out and put in a positive performance against [Crystal] Palace and take that into Burnley.

‘Let’s hope that we can put ourselves in a good place to go into City.

‘One thing’s for sure, the next three games, we’ll give it everything we can.’

Gerrard took the reins at Villa Park last November following the sacking of Dean Smith and has endured a good first season as a Premier League manager.

Villa are currently 11th in the table and could still finish as high as eighth if all results go their way.

But having captained Liverpool for so long, and having missed out on a title win with the Reds, Gerrard will no doubt be keeping a close eye on the title race and will be hoping his Villa side can upset City when the time comes.
