The 34-year-old is keen to keep on playing and is staying fit while training with the League One side as he waits for an opportunity.
That may or not come with Reading, who suffered relegation from the Championship at the end of last season and would like to have the international in their ranks, but could struggle to come up with the finances to tempt him to sign.
However, Ruben Selles has been appointed as manager of the Royals, having also left Southampton at the end of last season.
The Spaniard worked with Walcott at St Mary’s as coach and manager and picked him regularly during his stint in charge.
Selles will be hoping to persuade the forward that Reading is the place for him in the final years of his career after playing in the top flight since 2006.
Walcott is also keen to stay in the vicinity of where he has been living and Reading is not far from Southampton, while he also spent time growing up in Berkshire.
Walcott began his career with the Saints and signed for Arsenal in 2006 where he went on to make 397 appearances in all competitions, scoring 108 goals.
He left for Everton in January 2018, scoring 11 goals in 85 games for the Toffees, before returning to Southampton where he scored just five times in 58 games in his second stint with the club.
