co-owner Todd Boehly reportedly questioned the club’s decision to overlook star Aurelien Tchouameni last summer as the American faces up to the prospect of losing both Jorginho and N’Golo Kante at the end of the season.

Boehly oversaw a record summer during his first transfer window at Stamford Bridge, with the American giving £280m to spend before his sacking earlier this month.

Despite the outlay, Chelsea still have holes in their squad and wants to sign another centre-back after the departures of Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger.

But another pressing area is central midfield, where Chelsea look extremely light.

Both Jorginho and Kante are out of contract at the end of the season, with neither close to signing a new deal.

The Italian has offers from Serie A clubs while Kante rejected Chelsea’s last offer as they would only offer a two-year deal given his age and injury record.

The situation threatens to become a repeat of the episode that saw Christensen and Antonio leave at the same time and Boehly feels the club have been naive.

According to Sport, Boehly was said to be ‘baffled’ by the club’s decision to sign Saul Niguez on a season-long loan in 2021.

The Blues moved for the Spaniard because Marina Granovskaia reportedly had concerns over a deal for then-Monaco ace Tchouameni.

She felt the Frenchman was not a ready-made first team player and would not benefit Tuchel immediately.

The 20-year-old has since joined Real Madrid and the Spaniards chose to sell Casemiro to Manchester United in August, such was their belief in Tchouameni.

Boehly felt Chelsea should have moved for Tchouameni in 2021 when there was less competition for his signature and the club will now need to spend even more cash as Jorginho and Kante could depart against the club’s wishes.

Niguez’s move was a disaster and the midfielder failed to impress during his ten appearances for the club, when he scored once.
