Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris hails Arsenal defender William Saliba

Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris has praised defender William Saliba for his impressive form while on loan at Marseille.

The Gunners splashed out £27million to sign the centre-back from Saint-Etienne in 2019, but he is yet to make a competitive appearance for the north side.

Saliba was immediately loaned back to Ligue 1 club Saint-Etienne for a season after signing, while he has also spent a short spell at Nice, and is now at Marseille.

The 21-year-old has seen his solid performances rewarded with a first call-up to the senior French squad for upcoming friendlies against Ivory Coast and South Africa.

Spurs and Les Bleus captain Lloris is backing the defender to ‘go up another level’.

‘What he’s doing at a club like Marseille at 21 years of age, that’s impressive,’ Lloris said, via .

‘He’s got this calm strength about him. We feel him ready and serene. He’s got the assets to go up another level in his career.

‘If the chance presents itself, there’s nothing better for him to play his first game for France at the Vélodrome.’

Discussing his future recently, Saliba admitted he is open to extending his stay at Marseille.

‘I don’t hide the fact that I feel good here but I don’t know my future,’ Saliba told RMC Sport.

‘The most important thing is to qualify for the  and to go as far as possible in the Conference League.

‘I think that there will be discussions afterwards, at the end of May and the beginning of June, with  and Marseille, we will decide at that time.

‘But it is certain that to continue here [at Marseille] wouldn’t be a bad idea, on the contrary, I know the city, my teammates, my coach.

‘But it doesn’t just depend on me. We’ll see how it goes, but it also depends on Arsenal who must give their approval, we’ll see.’
