have confirmed the signing of 18-year-old Swedish sensation Lucas Bergvall from Djurgarden, who had been linked with both and Barcelona.
In fact, he was not just linked with Barcelona, but the giants were very close to agreeing a deal before Spurs swooped and persuaded the teenager to move to north .
report that Tottenham’s technical director Johan Lange led the chase to sign Bergvall and landed the deal on the evening of Thursday 1 February, with the deal done on Friday, the player’s 18th birthday.
This came after the midfielder visited Spurs on Monday and met Ange Postecoglou, before visiting Barcelona the following day.
The move is thought to be worth an initial €10m (£8.5m), with add-ons to come.
However, the Sweden international will remain at Djurgarden for the rest of the season and link up with Spurs at the start of July.
A Tottenham statement confirmed: ‘We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement for Lucas Bergvall to join the Club from Swedish Allsvenskan side Djurgarden.
‘The midfielder has agreed a deal that will run until 2029 and he will join us on 1 July.’
Bergvall had also been touted as a potential signing for clubs as varied as Manchester City, Brighton and Juventus, but remained calm when speaking last month.
‘I know there is a lot of speculation, but I’m trying to focus on the national team and I’m happy to be here for the January tour,’ .
‘Now I’m a Djurgarden player. I am proud that my club is asking for so much money. But Djurgarden and my agents will take care of that. I don’t know where I will play next season.’
Spurs have won the race to sign him and fans will look forward to watching him next season.
