Tottenham issue statement condemning ‘disgusting’ racist abuse of defender Destiny Udogie after Liverpool win

have issued a public statement condemning the racist abuse Destiny Udogie received on after the team’s 2-1 win against Liverpool on Saturday.

The second red card occurred after Jota fouled Udogie, with the Spurs left-back becoming the target of racist abuse in the comments under a post he put out after the game.

‘We are disgusted at the racist messages directed towards Destiny Udogie on social media following Saturday’s game against Liverpool,’ the statement by the club on Monday said.

‘We will work with the Premier League and, where possible, take action against any individual we are able to identify.’

‘We stand with you Destiny.’

Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out echoed the club’s sentiments, with Head of Player Engagement Troy Townsend saying he was ‘appalled’ by the racist abuse the defender received online.

‘No amount of controversy or high emotion surrounding a game can ever warrant this abhorrent outburst,’ he added.

‘We are extremely concerned that players are being continually targeted on social media following games in the worst possible terms and it is vital that those responsible are held to account. High-profile players have been targeted almost every weekend since the season began in August.

‘This worrying trend is a sad reminder of how much work remains to combat discrimination in football, and it is vital that social media companies help address this problem with the seriousness it requires.’

Ugodie was signed by Spurs in August 2022 and has made an impressive start to his first season at the club after he spent last year on loan at Udinese.

The Italian has started all seven matches in the Premier League this season under new manager Ange Postecoglou, with Saturday’s dramatic late winner ensuring they remain unbeaten this season, moving them just one point of league leaders Manchester City.

The north London club next face a trip to Luton Town as they look to maintain their unbeaten start.
