Tottenham are reportedly very close to agreeing a deal with Middlesbrough for highly sought after right-back Djed Spence.
According to , there has been a breakthrough in the negotiations between the two clubs and the transfer could be completed within a few days, with a medical expected in the next 48 hours.
Spence has been linked with various Premier League clubs this summer, including Tottenham, , and Nottingham Forest, after the 21-year-old’s highly impressive loan spell at the City Ground last season.
In 46 games he scored three goals and made five assists, helping Forest win promotion back to the top-flight and being named in the Championship Team of the Season.
Prior to that, the England U21 international had made 70 appearances for Middlesbrough after coming through Fulham’s academy.
It is unknown how much Tottenham will pay for Spence, although it is said to be in the region of £12million to £20m.
He will become Antonio Conte’s sixth signing of the summer, following forward Richarlison, midfielder Yves Bissouma, wide-man Ivan Perisic, goalkeeper Fraser Forster and centre-back Clement Lenglet, as the Italian manager looks to finally end the club’s long wait for silverware.
While he is young, and has never experienced top-flight football before, Spence should be comfortable playing in Conte’s system, having excelled as a wing-back under Steve Cooper in the last campaign.
Whether he will be first-choice right-wing-back straight away remains to be seen, although he should provide a significant upgrade on Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal.
Both players have struggled significantly since moving to North London, and although both were included in Tottenham’s pre-season tour of South Korea, one may now be sold or loaned out to accommodate Spence’s arrival.
On the other flank of the defence, , with new signing Perisic, and Ryan Sessegnon set to occupy the left-wing-back position.
