Liverpool and drew 2-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday as the title race took another twist.
opened the scoring in a dominant first-half for Liverpool but levelled it up and after Kobbie Mainoo handed United the lead, Mohamed Salah netted a 84th-minute penalty to give both sides a point.
The result means Liverpool now have 71 points – the same as leaders Arsenal – but stay second due to their inferior goal difference, while they are one point ahead of Manchester City with all three sides having just seven games left.
United, meanwhile, remain in sixth, 11 points behind Aston Villa with a game in hand as they look to keep their slim top-four hopes alive.
Erik ten Hag’s side stuck the ball in the back of the net after just two minutes but Alejandro Garnacho was clearly offside before Andre Onana was forced into a huge save to deny Dominik Szoboszlai in a frantic start.
Liverpool started to dominate the chances with Szoboszlai twice going close and the Reds deservedly took the lead when Darwin Nunez’s flicked header from a corner found Diaz from six yards out to fire home.
Casemiro flashed a header across goal just before the half-hour mark but two massive opportunities then fell for Liverpool with Salah’s curling effort tipped away before Nunez’ shot went just over.
Liverpool headed into the break with 1.59 expected goals (xG) against United’s 0.00 – producing eight corners and 15 shots – in a very one-sided first-half which saw United’s players booed off at Old Trafford, attempting zero shots in the opening 45 minutes of a top-flight game for the first time in nine years.
United burst into life after the restart, though, making it 1-1 in the 50th minute through a bizarre goal, with Fernandes intercepting Jarell Quansah’s sloppy pass and spotting Caoimhin Kelleher well off his line as he found the back of the net all the way from inside the centre circle.
The Red Devils looked a completely different side to the first-half as they pushed to take the lead, with Garnacho seeing a strike deflected behind and Kelleher conjuring up a key save, before Nunez wasted a five-on-two counter attack to leave Klopp fuming.
The Theatre of Dreams then became the Theatre of Nightmares for Klopp’s men as United’s teenage sensation Mainoo picked up the ball near the edge of the box, turned and curled an absolute stunner into the top corner to hand Ten Hag’s side the lead.
The game was not over, though, as Aaron Wan-Bissaka hacked down Harvey Elliott for a late Liverpool penalty, which Salah slotted past Onana to avoid defeat to their arch rivals.
The Reds will now turn their attentions towards Thursday’s Europa League clash against Atalanta before they return to top-flight action against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
