is confident the title race will be far more competitive next season and has backed Liverpool, and to all improve.

Manchester City retained their crown as they completed an historic treble, winning 12 league games on the spin in the run-in to reel in Arsenal and secure their fourth title in the last five years.

Only Liverpool in 2019-20 have managed to disrupt Pep Guardiola’s stranglehold on the Premier League, though Jurgen Klopp’s side finished 22 points off the pace last season.

United fared a little better, 14 points adrift of their noisy neighbours, while Chelsea endured a miserable campaign, but Rooney believes all three teams will challenge City and Arsenal when the new season kicks off.

Discussing Arsenal’s chances of competing again, Rooney said: ‘I think the signings they’ve made have been really good signings for them to try and kick on and challenge Manchester City.

‘They [City] will be the favourites again to win the Premier League. I think Liverpool will be better next season, Chelsea will be better. Hopefully Manchester United will be better as well!

‘But I think Arsenal have made some really good signings and they will compete again.’

He continued: ‘I think Manchester City have certainly raised everything. You look at Liverpool for a couple of seasons were really challenging them. I think they’ve set a challenge for Manchester United, for Chelsea, for Arsenal, for Liverpool and for all the teams really.

‘I think Guardiola has been, for me, one of the best things to happen to English football – not just in terms of the league but in terms of the English national team.

‘The coaching he’s given some of the young English players – before with [Raheem] Sterling, John Stones, Kyle Walker – has really helped them develop as players. And then those senior players in the England setup pass that knowledge on to the other players as well.

‘So I think there’s a challenge there, it goes in cycles, we’ve seen that throughout the years with Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea having dominance.

‘Unfortunately it’s Manchester City’s time but I’m sure the teams who are going to be challenging will come back over the next few years, that’s for sure.’

On United, he added: ‘I think Ten Hag has done really well since he came in last season and you can see he’s trying to create a squad and a mentality with the signings he made last season and again what they’re trying to do this year.’

Meanwhile, the United legend has after the England defender was.

Rooney added to : ‘To have the armband taken off you, how does he move forward with the club?

‘That shows the manager really doesn’t believe in him. It leaves Harry in a position where he has to think on what he does moving forward. The manager has shown he is not part of the plans.

‘I’m sure Harry will want to go and play — for himself, for his England career — to put himself in the best position to be as successful as he can. The best thing now is probably for him to move.
