legend insists Harry Maguire can play a ‘big part’ in the club’s future and the defender often looks ‘world class’ when he plays for England.

The United skipper has come in for fierce criticism this season after a significant drop off in his performance levels for the Red Devils.

Maguire, 29, faces a fight for his future at Old Trafford and much could depend on who takes charge this summer, with and Erik ten Hag battling it out for the role.

But Rooney believes Maguire will still have a ‘big part’ to play in the club’s future, as his performances for England show he can often look ‘world class’.

‘I like Harry (Maguire). I know him personally,’ Rooney told SkySports.

‘He hasn’t been in his best form this season as a lot of players haven’t. He goes and plays for England and looks like a world-class centre-back.

‘Again a lot of it is confidence. The players need to feel winning again and winning consistently to get that confidence back. If they do that, I think Harry can be a big part of it.’

United hope to conclude their managerial search this month, with a second round of interviews expected for the candidates.

Ten Hag and Pochettino have already been interviewed but Rooney says whoever is chosen needs to be given time.

‘It needs someone to come in with that time to get that club back to where it deserves to be. It’s not going to happen if you keep changing manager every two years,’ said Rooney.

‘(Sir Alex) Ferguson was like the godfather of the club, not just the players but the staff, the academy, he was on top of everything.

‘When you lose someone like that from the club, someone else is coming in and it’s a massive change.’
