His father was a teenage prodigy so it should be no surprise that Kai Rooney is already showing signs that he can follow in the footsteps of his legendary dad.
The 12-year-old joined United’s academy when he was just ten and he’s doing the family name proud by scoring regularly for United’s U12s side.
Rooney snr. famously burst onto the scene with a stunning strike against when he was just 16, while the most famous goal of his career came in 2011 when he scored a stunning overhead kick against neighbours Manchester City at Old Trafford.
And Kai has shown the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree with a similarly stunning strike against this weekend.
Cutting in onto his left foot, Kai executed a sublime curling effort over the goalkeeper and into the far left-hand corner with stunning ease.
Rooney is now starting his managerial career, where he’s impressed with Derby County.
The United legend recently admitted he dreams of taking charge at Old Trafford but he’s not putting pressure on Kai to follow in his footsteps in football.
‘I’m a proud dad,” said Rooney, after Kai signed his deal with United.
‘He’s been working hard, he obviously came over to the States with us to continue with his football.
‘He went on trial with Manchester United and he’s impressed the coaches. He signed his forms yesterday so I’m delighted for him. He did have other options, other clubs to go to but he decided he wants to sign for Manchester United, so it was his decision and not mine.’
Kai is playing alongside the son of United forward Cristiano Ronaldo for the Red Devils’ U12s.
Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. joined the club after Ronaldo’s return last summer and he’s certainly under more pressure than Kai to emulate his father.
‘We’ll see if my son will become a great footballer,’ said Ronaldo in 2020.
‘He has potential. He is fast and dribbles well, but that is not enough.’
