technical manager Gerry Hamstra has not given up on Erik ten Hag remaining at the club – bit admits he ‘knows how the world works’ with the head coach on ’s radar.
Ten Hag was interviewed by United last week with the club eager to line up a new permanent head coach before the end of the season.
The Dutchman still faces competition from PSG boss and Spain head coach Luis Enrique who are still to be interviewed by the club. But ten Hag is understood to be a front runner having made a positive impression during talks.
Ten Hag’s current contract with Ajax runs until 2023 and Hamstra remains hopeful he will remain in Amsterdam beyond this summer.
But with interest from United and at least two other clubs, he is remaining realistic over what could happen in the coming months.
‘It would be fantastic if he is still Ajax’s coach next season,’ Hamstra told
‘He still has an ongoing contract with Ajax, but we also all know how the world works.
‘Erik is a professional and focuses on this season himself, on the important months ahead in which the prizes will be distributed.
‘The future will tell, but it is clear that Erik is very important for Ajax.’
Ten Hag has already drawn up a list of potential transfer targets should he become the new United boss.
According to The Telegraph, he is very keen to bring Brazil international Anthony with him to Manchester, with the 22-year-old having impressed enormously under Ten Hag’s guidance at Ajax.
