Wesley Fofana posted a video of teammate and the rest of the singing a ‘racist and discriminatory’ chant, with the caption ‘Football in 2024: uninhibited racism.’

The clip shows the Argentina team celebrating their Copa win at the weekend, although what they are singing has been described as ‘racist and discriminatory’ by the French Football Federation (FFF), who are launching a legal complaint against their Argentine counterparts.

A press release from the FFF read: ‘The president of the French Football Federation, Philippe Diallo, strongly condemns the unacceptable racist and discriminatory comments made against the players of the French team as part of a song sung by players and supporters of the Argentine team after their victory in Copa America and broadcast in a video on social networks.

‘Faced with the seriousness of these shocking remarks, contrary to the values of sport and human rights, the president of the FFF decided to directly challenge his Argentine counterpart and and to file a legal complaint for insulting remarks of a racial and discriminatory nature.’

and his teammate Fofana bringing it into sharp focus, Chelsea are conducting their own investigation into the incident.

The video was broadcast on Instagram by Fernandez before it was quite swiftly cut off.

The offending chant emerged at the 2022 World Cup, where Argentina beat France in the showpiece in Qatar.

The song, directed at the French players, claims ‘they are all from Angola’ while they have ‘Nigerian’ mothers and ‘Cameroonian’ fathers.

Fernandez is due to have some time off after Argentina’s Copa America final win over Colombia on Sunday before returning to Chelsea before pre-season training.
