The record for highest number of goals scored by one side in a single World Game belongs to Hungary.

In 1982, the Hungarian national team played El Salvador and delivered a crushing 10-1 defeat.

A few other teams have also won their World Cup games by nine goals, including Hungary against South Korea (9-0) in 1954, and Yugoslavia against Zaire (also 9-0) in 1974.

As for the highest number of goals in a World Cup qualifying match, Australia’s 31-0 defeat of American Samoa when trying to get into the 2002 World Cup definitely takes the title.

However, there are a few more different records to make note of.

In 1954, the World Cup match between Austria and Switzerland culminated in 12 goals total – with 7 for the Austrians and 5 for the Swiss – creating the record for most goals by both teams in a single World Cup face-off.

As it happens, Hungary has another record – scoring a whopping 27 goals in the 1954 World Cup, making it the highest number by one country in a single World Cup tournament.

Brazil currently holds the record for most World Cup goals across the years, mind, with 229 total since 1930, according to .

But what about individual players?

Legendary footballer Just Fontaine holds the record for most goals scored by an individual in a single World Cup tournament, as he netted 13 goals for France across six matches at the 1958 World Cup.
