Once the teams are confirmed, each club is placed in a pairing grid, which defines the dates they will be at home.

A computer will then randomly generate fixtures, ensuring that in any five matches, there is a split of three home fixtures, two away or the other way around.

The computer is programmed to try and minimise travel on key dates such as Boxing Day or New Year’s Day, while it also takes into account local derbies to ensure that both club rivals don’t both play at home at the same time.
