The Gunners had an eight point lead over City at the start of the month but against Liverpool, West Ham and Southampton have left them only five points clear, with the Mancunians also possessing two games in hand.

Arsenal will to regain the initiative in this titanic title tussle, although the form guide between the two clubs makes for grim reading for Mikel Arteta’s men.

Let’s take a look at when last tasted victory over and the head-to-head record between the two sides.

When was the last time Arsenal beat Manchester City?

Arsenal’s last win over Manchester City in any competition was the 2-1 win in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley six years ago.

The clash in April 2017 saw City open the scoring through Sergio Aguero in the second half, before Nacho Monreal restored parity ten minutes later.

With the game in extra-time, Alexis Sanchez stepped up to fire Arsene Wenger’s side into the final where they beat Chelsea to claim a record 13th title.

City have had it all their own way in the rivalry since then, winning the last 15 fixtures between the two sides in a row.

Arsenal’s last victory over Manchester City in the Premier League was the 2-1 win at the Emirates in December 2015 as the north Londoners battled against Leicester in the Premier League title race.

Theo Walcott had put the home side ahead just after the half hour mark after City had dominated the early possession before Olivier Giroud added a second in first half stoppage time following a dreadful clearance from Eliaquim Mangala.

Yaya Toure pulled one back for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, who spurned opportunities to equalise late on through Toure and substitute Wilfried Bony.

Arsenal’s last win away to City was the 2-0 triumph in the Premier League in January 2015.

Arsenal and Manchester City’s head-to-head record

Whilst Manchester City have a clear edge in their recent meetings, Arsenal retain the better overall head-to-head record.

Of the 184 official meetings between the two clubs, Arsenal have won 86 of them compared to City’s 55.

The Gunners have also won 83 of the 175 league fixtures compared to City’s 50.

Arteta, who worked as a coach under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City between 2016 and 2019, has lost all nine of his clashes with his former master, scoring four goals and conceding 22 in the process.

Manchester City have won both meetings between the two this season; a in January followed by a in February.
