Former defender Nigel Winterburn believes Serge Gnabry would be a ‘good addition’ to the current Gunners squad – but is not convinced he gets into Mikel Arteta’s starting XI.

Gnabry came through the Arsenal academy before leaving the club to return to Germany in 2016, starring for in recent years.

The 26-year-old has been a key player under Julian Nagelsmann this season with 13 goals and nine assists to his name but his future with the German giants is uncertain with his current contract set to expire in 2023.

Recent reports claim Bayern and Gnabry remain some way off in negotiations over personal terms with Arsenal linked with a move for the Germany international who has never hidden his love for his former side.

But with Mikel Arteta’s current attacking options in superb form, Winterburn doesn’t believe Gnabry should be a priority.

‘He’s improved dramatically and his confidence is soaring,’ Winterburn told .

‘In terms of how he’s developed as a player, if I’m honest there were times at Arsenal where he wasn’t getting a lot of game time and his fitness wasn’t as good as it should have been.

‘The improvement he’s shown and what he’s achieved since leaving Arsenal is incredible.

‘He’d be a good addition to the squad, I don’t think anyone would deny that, but where would he come in and who’s position would he potentially take.

‘There’s Saka, Smith-Rowe and Martinelli, so he’ll most likely play in one of those roles.

‘I think he would improve the squad, but I think Arsenal need to strengthen their squad in other areas rather than the wide areas.

‘But if Arsenal decide to take him and that move materialises, then yes of course he improves the squad.’
