Xavi wants to return to as he feels the superstar winger’s time at the club is not over.
Messi left Barca last summer to join Paris Saint-Germain after the Catalan outfit were unable to renew his contract due to financial issues.
The Argentina international is a certified Barcelona icon having scored a club-record 672 goals in 778 games.
Messi, who is considered one of the greatest footballers of all time, hasn’t lived up to expectations in Paris due to a mixture of injuries and patchy form.
But Barca boss Xavi doesn’t think the 35-year-old’s story at Barca is finished yet.
‘I would like to think that Messi’s time at the club is not over, let alone the way it happened,’ said Xavi.
‘I think he deserves a second chance, or another chance, to show that he can leave the club well and that he has been the best player in history.
‘From next year we will talk about it. But the question is whether I would like it, the answer is yes.’
Barcelona president Joan Laporta is also dreaming of bringing Messi back to Camp Nou to end his career at the Catalan club.
‘I feel indebted to Leo Messi,’ said Laporta.
‘I would like him to end his career in a Barca shirt, and be applauded at all the stadiums.
‘I feel partially responsible for how things ended, and I feel that this is a temporary end and that we will make this dream a reality. At least that is the dream.’
