Jack Wilshere has been in talks with former club over a possible return as a coach of one of their youth sides.

The 30-year-old may well be at the end of his playing days after a short spell with Danish side Aarhus last season and little sign of a new contract elsewhere.

He has been open of his desire to move into coaching and the Gunners are in need of new appointments in their youth ranks.

Kevin Betsy left his position as Under-23s manager to take charge of Crawley Town in League Two and Under-18s boss Dan Micchie left with him to become his assistant.

With vacancies needing to be filled, the report that Arsenal have held talks with Wilshere through academy chief Per Mertesacker.

There has been nothing more than talks so far, with the club also considering internal candidates for the roles vacated by Betsy and Micchie.

While looking for a new club last season Wilshere trained with the Arsenal first team and did some work with the Under-23 and Under-18 sides, which encouraged him to return to do more of the same in future.

‘I think I would love to go back to Arsenal and coach, once I have fully made that decision,’ Wilshere said on the prospect of not playing again.

‘That decision might be in a week. It might be in two years. If I don’t get a club to play for, before pre-season or halfway through pre-season, I am not going to go to Arsenal to keep my fitness up, because then I would feel that I am holding onto something that is not there. With a coaching role, maybe. We will see.

‘When I went back to Arsenal I was coaching every day with the under-18s and 23s, I loved every minute of it. I really enjoyed being back on the pitch and coaching.’
