defender will not be linking up with the England squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures, returning to his club due to injury.

The nature of the injury was not revealed in the statement from the England camp, but simply that White ‘will continue his rehabilitation with his club.’

The 24-year-old had been struggling with a hamstring injury at the end of the Premier League season and it may be that he is not risking making that problem any worse.

The former Brighton man is the only withdrawal from the Three Lions squad which linked up together on Monday, although there will be some late arrivals.

Raheem Sterling, Kieran Trippier, James Ward-Prowse and Trent Alexander-Arnold will all be arriving on Tuesday to join their international teammates.

Gareth Southgate has not called up a replacement for White, with 26 players still reporting for the squad and plenty of cover in central defence.

Harry Maguire, John Stones, Marc Guehi, Conor Coady and Fikayo Tomori will all be able to play at centre-back over the four games, so there is unlikely to be an issue for the England boss.

It is a busy schedule for the England squad at the end of the club season, playing four Nations League games in quick succession.

Southgate’s men take on Hungary and Germany on their travels on 4 and 7 June, before hosting Italy and Hungary on 11 and 14 June.

All the group stage fixtures of the Nations League come in two bunches, with a trip to Italy and a home game against Germany coming in September.
