Liverpool’s Sadio Mane breaks Champions League record held by Chelsea legend Didier Drogba

’s goal against Villarreal on Tuesday night saw him become the highest-scoring African in the knockout stages of the , taking his tally to 15.

Mane completed the scoring in Liverpool’s dramatic 3-2 win in Spain, booking their spot in the Champions League final, where they will meet or Liverpool.

Things had looked very uncomfortable for the Reds, falling 2-0 behind, which made the tie level, but ’s side powered to victory in the second half.

The final goal came party thanks to Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli dashing a long way out of his goal and allowing Mane to pinch the ball and scamper through to score into an open goal, but the Senegalese forward will accept that helping hand gratefully.

Mane’s 15th goal in the Champions League knockout stages surpasses the tally of Didier Drogba, who had shared the record with the Liverpool star previously.

Mohamed Salah is on 11 goals in the knockout stages, while Samuel Eto’o is behind on 10.

It was also the 139th goal of Liverpool’s season so far, which already breaks their record for goals in a single campaign.

They are now set to absolutely smash the previous record as they still have four Premier League games to play and the finals of the Champions League and FA Cup to come.

The win in Villarreal kept Liverpool’s hopes of an immense quadruple alive, as they are set to face either Real Madrid or Manchester City in the Champions League final and Chelsea in the FA Cup showpiece.

The Premier League title is out of their hands as they remain a point behind City with four matches left and they must rely on a slip up from Pep Guardiola’s side.
