Asked which team-mates impressed him after Netherlands thumped Belgium, Van Dijk told : ‘[Steven] Bergwijn was incredible, [Steven] Berghuis too. Memphis [Depay] was excellent. Frenkie [De Jong]… well, he always plays well in my eyes.’

‘It is always a victory for the collective, but there are people who can excel in the collective which is of course great.

‘I like to be the first player to receive the ball from the defenders. I play a lot differently here than I do at Barcelona, I think this suits me much better.’
