It was another chastening afternoon for Ronaldo and United, as Ralf Rangnick’s side suffered a defeat which all-but ended their hopes of securing Champions League qualification.

Anthony Gordon’s deflected first-half goal was enough to help the Toffees secure a priceless victory in their fight to beat the drop.

Interim boss Rangnick admitted after the game that his beleaguered side do not deserve to secure European qualification but denied the speculation surrounding his future and the likely arrival of Erik ten Hag played a part in another dismal display.

He said: ‘If we play like we did here we just don’t deserve it.’

‘The players themselves should be eager to play international football, if possible Champions League. In order to qualify for Europe you have to be able to score in 95 minutes in a game like this.

‘I don’t think this (talk of a new manager) should be an excuse. We are Manchester United. We have lots of international players. There shouldn’t be an alibi.

‘There will be a new manager next season. If this is announced now or in 10 days it shouldn’t have an impact.’
