are interested in hiring former Liverpool coach Andy O’Boyle as the club’s new deputy Director of , with the board keen to take some of the burden of responsibility away from John Murtough.
Murtough replaced Ed Woodward as the club’s foremost director earlier this year and has been charged with turning the club around, with United on a five-year run without silverware.
O’Boyle is currently head of elite performance at the Premier League, where he works on programmes to maximise performance output.
But the Northern Irishman made his name at Anfield, where he worked as a first-team coach after working his way through the academy. O’Boyle has even spent time at United in the past, working with youngsters.
Murtough is currently focused on appointing a new long-term manager at Old Trafford and he can’t call on the expertise of Ralf Rangnick, as the German currently occupies the interim role at the Theatre of Dreams and the club felt it was unwise to include him in discussions about his successor.
It means there are areas of the club that are being overlooked and the Mail say United are considering approaching O’Boyle about handing a lending hand to Murtough, as his background in sports science and data could provide a greater analytical mind on the board.
United are leaning towards hiring Erik ten Hag, with the Ajax manager having leapfrogged Mauricio Pochettino as favourite for the position in recent weeks.
Pochettino oversaw PSG’s abysmal Champions League exit to Real Madrid, when the Ligue 1 giants threw away a 2-0 aggregate lead at the Bernabeu.
Ten Hag is keen on moving to Old Trafford and is likely to leave Ajax at the end of the season, regardless of whether United make their approach or not.
