has confessed he hasn’t been keeping tabs on one of Manhcester United’s brightest young talents amid reports of a promotion to the first team.

James Garner made his Premier League debut three years ago against and has been compared to Michael Carrick on account of his composure on the ball and passing range.

The 21-year-old has excelled while on loan at promotion chasing Nottingham Forest this season and reports earlier this week suggested he would challenge for a first team place next season, regardless of who takes over from Ralf Rangnick.

United’s interim boss, however, confessed he hadn’t had time to track Garner’s performances for Steve Cooper’s upwardly mobile side.

‘To be honest I haven’t seen that many games of Nottingham Forest but I will probably do that in the next couple of weeks with my staff and the analysis team,’ said Rangnick.

‘I’ve heard he’s [Garner] scored four goals and had four assists there [Nottingham Forest], but my focus, as you can imagine has been on the current team in the last weeks and months.

‘This is certainly good if players get gametime somewhere and do well.’

When Garner returns, he will find only limited competition for places, especially given Paul Pogba’s impending departure. The France international was dropped for Saturday’s game at Everton with Nemanja Matic, another player whose future is uncertain, preferred instead.

The England Under-21 international will have to compete with Fred, however, whose performances have improved under Rangnick.

‘I’m not surprised to be honest because he’s the type of player that if you want to play a proactive style of football then he has a lot of assets that you need,’ said Rangnick when asked to explain the Brazilian’s upturn in fortunates.

‘He’s [Fred] always trying to win balls and is always on the front foot and he’s also one of the most underestimated players in possession of the ball.

‘He can score goals, give assists and that’s why he’s also regularly playing for Brazil.’
