Highly popular content creator Kaitlyn Siragusa, better known as Amouranth, has taken to Twitter to fend off a continuing scam using her likeness and photos. The scammer lures unsuspecting people into believing that they’re in a romantic relationship, only to then scam them for money (which is the last thing Amouranth would need to do, ).
Amouranth’s Instagram was banned due to the explicit content that she posts onto the platform, along with photos promoting her On***ans and other subscription platforms.
Despite being banned for this content, the fake account running the scam sat at 117K followers, simply by reposting content from Amouranth’s Twitter account to ensure that it appeared to be the real thing.
Instagram scams and influencers
Online scams are nothing new, with many influencers suffering from similar issues over the years. However, Meta (formerly Facebook) have appeared to routinely ignore the reports made against the account by Amouranth.
On top of the romance scam, the fake account also created a fake fansite. The collection of links is still floating about and allows those tricked into the scam to send money via PayPal.
Siragusa , as when they banned her it allowed these scammers to ‘take advantage of the vacuum of people looking to follow me on Instagram.’
Siragusa claims that similar things have happened before when a member of Cognizant – a contracted moderation team Meta has previously used – attempted to extort her for bitcoins to protect her account from having content removed.
However, after several hours that the account had been taken down, albeit only after dozens of reports had been registered.
Influencers aren’t the only ones to be targeted by this sort of scam, as wrestlers have recently had to put out warnings to their fans.
recently issued a statement to ensure that her fanbase knew that she would never approach them over a ‘private account’ and Seth Rollins was after someone scammed them out of money by posing as the wrestler.
