Ashanti has a slightly new perspective on relationships these days and has learnt to be ‘patient’ when it comes to dating.

The Foolish singer, who is notoriously private about her love life, was previously in a relationship with rapper Nelly for 11 years until 2014 but, aside from that, has kept the rest of her love life out of the spotlight.

She’s set to embrace the romantic world on-screen with a role in upcoming rom-com The Plus One which frankly, sounds like it’ll give us all the feels.

Without divulging too much about her personal life, Ashanti, 41, opened up about how her approach to dating has changed in 40s compared to her 20s.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, the R&B star – who will be – said: ‘It’s not too different but what I will say is I’m more patient now than in the beginning. When you first start dating you’re like, “I want this to happen now etc”, and I will admit I’m a tiny bit spoiled.

‘Sometimes I want my way but as you get older you have to understand it’s about compromise, sacrifice and just having patience.’

She added: ‘Everything else is the same but you just got to have more patience now.’

Ashanti will next appear on screens in The Plus One, which she is both producing and starring in.

Teasing the plot, she dished: ‘I’m so excited about it, I think the movie is going to be hilarious. I’m playing a bride. I get married and my best friend is a guy, he’s like my man of honour and I hate his girlfriend. I’m like, you can bring anybody you want to the wedding except your girlfriend.

Ashanti is preparing to dazzle the UK with her hits on tour this month

‘So of course he brings her and we go at it the whole movie, it’s so funny and puts you in the mind of Bridesmaids, Couples Retreat, that kind of humour.’

Proving to be a queen after our own heart, she added: ‘Rom-coms are my favourite.’

The Plus One will also star Mean Girls actor Jonathan Bennett, comedian Cedric The Entertainer and Star Trek: Picard actress Michelle Hurd. A release date is yet to be announced.

Ashanti will be launching her UK tour later this month to celebrate the 20th anniversary of her self-titled debut album and first single Foolish.
